Despite being the clear market leader, HP Sauce isn’t everybody’s first choice of brown sauce. In Ireland, there is an alternative which is so beloved by its fans that they will accept no substitute. May we present to you – Chef Brown Sauce!
If you already know Chef Brown Sauce, you will surely have an opinion as to whether it’s the greatest of them all, an acceptable condiment, or “just not right”. At Dalriata, we like to remain neutral on such matters, but what we can tell you is that some people are absolutely devoted to Chef Brown Sauce, and were delighted when we started to stock it. We can’t vouch for it, but Dalriata might just be the only place in Germany selling this Irish cult classic.
What’s so special about it? Well, although it may look a lot like HP Sauce, and perform exactly the same job, the ingredients are really quite different. Chef Brown Sauce features apple instead of tamarind, lending it sweetness as well as acidity.
It’s just the ticket on an Irish breakfast, goes great with a sausage sandwich or bacon butty, and it will thicken and enliven stews or casseroles.
