Of all our products, the legendary Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer holds a special place in our hearts. In a world of rising prices, shrinking products, and constant tinkering with classic recipes, these classic confections are just as good as they’ve always been. There are no cutbacks or compromises here – that familiar, old-fashioned packaging contains the same satisfyingly chunky wafer bars as ever. There are no unpleasant surprises here – Tunnock’s stick to the old ways.
Having said all that, there is one major difference in this particular product – these are Dark Chocolate Wafers, and dare we say they’re just a little bit more… grown-up?
Tunnock’s is an iconic Scottish brand, right up there with Irn-Bru. Its products are found everywhere in Scotland, but they’re also massively popular all over the UK and Ireland. You’ll find Caramel Wafers on biscuit plates from Cork to Cardiff, from Dover to Dublin.
Tunnock’s know that a good product will sell itself, and for most of its 120 years in business, the company has done little marketing. Even today, Tunnock’s is still a family company, owned by the grandson of the founder, who started the business in 1890. Many of the products in available today have been sold since the 1950s, and have hardly changed at all since that time. Even the packaging looks like it’s been around forever. Many brands aim for an old-fashioned look and feel for their products, but few do it as well as Tunnock’s – because they simply never saw the need to change a winning formula?
What is a Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer?
If you’ve never enjoyed a Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer, you really are in for something special. There’s an old-fashioned honesty to these bars which is increasingly rare today.
They contain no fewer than five layers of wafer, separated by four layers of caramel in between. No other product is as intricately composed as these perennial favourits. They’re a perfect balance of crunchy and chewy. They’re sweet, of course, but not too sweet, and this dark chocolate version has just a little more hearty chocolate flavour than its milk chocolate counterpart.
As well as being tasty, Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers are great value too – this pack contains eight bars, each weighing 30g. They’re perfect as a light snack in between meals – ideally served alongside a good pot of tea.
The Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer has a devoted following, verging on cult status – the University of St. Andrews has had a Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Appreciation Society for forty years!
