Here’s another exciting taste from Co. Armagh-based Burren Balsamics – roast onion jam.
Hang on – onion jam? Not relish, chutney, whatever?
No, jam is the right word for this delicious condiment from Burren Balsamics. Not only does it have the same texture as a sweet spread like Wilkin and Sons’ Strawberry Conserve, but it also contains a little fruit, in the form of blackberries and redcurrants. Like our other Burren Balsamics products, the base of this onion jam is a fine balsamic vinegar, to which are added lots and lots of sautéed onions, herbs and seasonings.
The result is a preserve with a wonderful balance of tastes. Hearty, savoury flavours from the caramelised onions, plus just enough bright sweetness from the berries, and of course the sharp tang of the vinegar. It’s outstanding with strong, flavourful cheeses, but it’s also great with cold meats such as roast ham or pastrami, and it will of course raise any sandwich to another level.
