When it comes to “more chocolate than biscuit”, Germany’s own Choco Leibniz is probably the best-known example, at least this side of the English Channel. But Ireland has its own competitor for the German classic – the Cadbury Snack Sandwich. These little beauties are almost two-thirds Cadbury’s milk chocolate!
Like the Jacob’s Club Milk, the Cadbury Snack, or “Purple Snack” as it’s affectionately known, has been a fixture for decades in the lunchboxes of millions of Irish schoolchildren. It’s the perfect breaktime treat, just the right size to tide a kid over until lunch.
What makes them so irresistible is the extremely generous helping of Cadbury’s milk chocolate. Bite in and you’ll find two thin wafers of crunchy shortcake, separated by a layer of milk chocolate – hence the name “sandwich”. This is then slathered in even more milk chocolate, until the whole thing is only 37% biscuit!
Somehow the whole is even greater than the sum of its parts. There’s something uniquely satisfying about a Cadbury’s Snack Sandwich that’s hard to put your finger on. So simple on paper, yet absolutely delicious. We could see ourselves getting hopelessly addicted to them.
Of course, Cadbury’s Snack Sandwich is far too good to be reserved only for kids. These are one treat you’ll never grow out of enjoying. Put a couple of these on the biscuit plate at tea time and they’re odds-on to be snapped up first. In our house, the only thing even more coveted was the inimitable Tunnock’s Tea Cake!
