Description

When it comes to gummy sweets, Germany is undisputed world champion. There’s an endless variety of fruity, fizzy, or sour treats, most of them made by one particular manufacturer, who shall remain nameless. But despite Germany’s dominance of the field, the UK can still teach them a thing or two. Here’s a product they have no answer to: Maynards Wine Gums!

Before we continue, we should clear up a common misconception about wine gums: despite the name, there is no actual wine in them! Some of them have a flavour which can be said to resemble certain kinds of wine, but really they taste more like Fruit Pastilles than any kind of booze. So don’t worry, kids can enjoy them just as much as adults. In fact, the Maynard family were strict teetotal Methodists who initially promoted their Wine Gums as an alternative to alcohol!

Maynards Wine Gums first appeared in 1909, and for over a century they have been a staple of every sweet shop in the UK and Ireland. Once upon a time they were most likely to be sold out of a jar, and bought by the quarter pound, maybe even as part of a 10p mix! Or perhaps you remember buying a box of them to share at the cinema. Sadly we can’t offer you the full nostalgic experience – these wine gums will come to you in a boring old plastic bag. The good news is, at 130g, there’s slightly more than a quarter pound in there!

Although there are many brands of wine gums, at Dalriata we sell Maynards because of their unique texture – soft, but still firm enough to be chewy. We think they’re the best wine gums you’ll find anywhere.

Please note that Maynards Wine Gums are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, as they are made with gelatine.
