In any case, McDonnell’s Curry Sauce might not be the first thing to come to mind when you think of “traditional Irish food”, but it’s been around for generations, so we think it counts!

This iconic “chip shop style” curry sauce has been a staple in Irish kitchens since the 1980s. Back then there wasn’t the near-infinite variety of foods from around the world that we take for granted today, and this stuff was pretty exotic. Now it is, as they say themselves, “as Irish as”!

There’s no point getting snooty about foods like McDonnell’s Curry Sauce. There’s nothing “authentic” about this stuff (whatever that means), and it doesn’t pretend to be either. And that’s why so many people love it.

What is McDonnell’s Original Curry Sauce?

Inside the squat tub is a magical powder containing a mysterious mixture of spices including coriander, ginger, cloves and fenugreek. Added to hot water and whisked vigorously, it makes a thick, rich sauce that blends the warmth of the spices with the sweet acidity of tomatoes and onions. The result is a mouth-watering, complex flavour that pairs perfectly with tender chicken and fluffy rice.

But we know you’re probably going to just slather it on your chips, and that’s OK!
