Description

One of the most popular products in our Berlin store is clotted cream. Our customers go crazy for the stuff, and of course, they’re usually buying it to eat with scones. The problem is, it seems like good scones are hard to come by in this part of Berlin, as we’re forever being asked where to buy them. Until recently, our answer has always been “Why don’t you buy some self-raising flour and make your own?”. But now we’re pleased to say we have an even easier solution, thanks to this tailor-made scones mix from beloved Irish miller Odlums.

If you’re a complete newcomer to baking, or you just haven’t turned your hand to making scones before, Odlums Irish White Scones Mix is the foolproof way to get perfect results every time. Even if you’re an experienced baker, this ready-made mix will cut down your prep time and take all the guesswork out of the process. It’s so much simpler than using plain flour and baking powder, and is even more reliable than self-raising flour.

What are scones?

Along with clotted cream, strawberry jam and of course a pot of freshly brewed tea, scones are a key component of a traditional afternoon tea, sometimes known as a cream tea. Originating in the southwest of England, this practice is also common in hotels and tea houses all over the country.

The authentic British scone may or may not contain dried fruit such as raisins and sultanas, and there’s even such a thing as a cheese scone. Whether you prefer simple ingredients or something a little fancier, they’re a delicious, indulgent afternoon snack.

How do I make scones?

With Odlums Irish White Scone Mix it couldn’t be easier. All you need is some milk or water, a baking tray, and something to cut the scone dough with – if you don’t have a dedicated scone or cookie cutter, a plastic beaker works well too.

Just tip the dry ingredients from the mix into a large mixing bowl, pour in the milk or water, and stir until you get a soft, but not sticky dough. Then tip out the contents of the large bowl onto a floured surface and knead lightly for a minute or two.

After kneading, use a rolling pin to form the dough into a sheet of about 25mm or one inch, and cut out individual scones using your cookie cutter or plastic beaker. For that extra finishing touch, you can optionally use a pastry brush to add a glaze of milk or beaten egg wash.

Now all you have to do is put them on a baking sheet and stick the lined baking tray in the oven for 15 minutes or so. Once baked, leave them on a wire rack for a while to cool. Before you know it you’ll be eating the best scones around!

With Odlums Irish White Scones Mix, there’s no need for a recipe, no need to make your own flour mixture – the package contains flour, raising agents, and even the right amount of sugar to produce six scones, the perfect amount for afternoon tea with a friend. You really can’t go wrong. So don’t hesitate, pick one up today – and don’t forget the clotted cream!
