At Dalriata, we’ve never understood why Colman’s Original English Mustard isn’t in every home in Germany. It seems as though everybody who tries it loves the stuff – and with good reason, it’s great!
Germany is a nation of mustard lovers, and mustard in general is never hard to come by. But if you’ve grown up accustomed to the mighty punch of English mustard like Colman’s, the choices available in the average German supermarket may not quite hit the spot. As with many things, local tastes tend towards the milder and sweeter end of the spectrum. Don’t get us wrong, there’s a time and a place for this, and there’ll always be space in our pantry for Düsseldorfer Senf alongside the coarse grain and the Dijon. But pride of place will always go to Colman’s.
Colman’s Mustard has a uniquely fiery taste that really sets it apart from other mustards. It also makes heavy use of turmeric, giving it a distinctive flavour quite unlike typical German Senf, or for that matter French styles such as Dijon mustard. With an almost wasabi-like intensity, it’s really a force to be reckoned with. If you’re used to American mustard on your hot dogs, you’ll find this is quite the upgrade. You certainly don’t need to slather this stuff on by the spoonful – small servings are quite sufficient.
Naturally, it’s the perfect accompaniment to our sausages and bacon, and will add colour and flavour to any cooked breakfast. It also goes great with roast beef, livens up a ham sandwich, and will give burgers a real kick. If you like mustard that makes it feel like flames are coming out of your nose, this is the choice for you!
