You may be wondering what these South African sauces are doing on a site specialising in British and Irish goods. And you would be right to do so. Yes, strictly speaking, Nando’s products don’t really fit into our retail concept. But Nando’s is practically an adopted son of the UK at this point, and our customers kept asking for them, so we got them in!

Nando’s is a chain of restaurants which originated in Johannesburg, South Africa, but has become an established feature of the dining landscape in the UK. Going to Nando’s with your friends is a common pastime for teenagers all over the country, and the term “cheeky Nando’s” has entered everyday language. Nando’s is growing in Ireland too, and there are now at least a dozen restaurants dotted around the island.

So how has Nando’s become such a huge international success story? What’s their secret? Peri-Peri sauce! And now you can find it here at Dalriata.

What is Nando’s peri-peri sauce?

Peri-Peri is a variety of chilli pepper which was first grown in Mozambique, in the southeast of the African continent. The people in that region have used them in their cuisine for hundreds of years, to add some delicious heat to any type of dish. With the addition of a little lemon juice, to these small, fiery peppers, you get peri-peri sauce. It’s a simple, but very effective mixture which will liven up just about anything. It’s particularly tasty as a marinade for grilled, spatchcocked chicken. And this is the dish that has made Nando’s reputation all over the world.

But you don’t have to limit yourself to chicken if you buy this sauce. It will liven up just about anything. Try it with grilled fish, mix it in with fried rice, dip vegetables in it, or just lash it all over your chips.

This medium sauce has enough heat to make things a little interesting, but it won’t reduce you to tears or leave your throat burning. For many people, it’s just enough. For some, it’s the first step on the long road to hot sauce addiction. Either way, it’s tasty stuff. But if you’re looking for something a little more special, check out our Blackfire range. Perhaps Hot House would be to your liking?

All Nando’s sauces are made without artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. They’re also completely vegetarian, and suitable for those on halal or kosher diets.
